ceramic_speaker_side_medDesigned by Joey Roth, the Ceramic Speakers are a small speaker and amp set crafted from porcelain, cork and Baltic birch. Not normally associated with sound systems, these materials create a nice contrast between electronic components and simple materials, while highlighting the speaker set’s inner workings and the simple path between sound source and ear.

The cork and porcelain have also both been chosen for their acoustically neutral properties -meaning, they don’t impart extra vibrations.

‘The objects that keep me sketching late into the night have always been tools for ephemeral experiences. These tools are exciting because they’re persistent, physical reminders of events that last only minutes. Their meaning becomes a dialog between my design and the user’s memories of tea sipped, music played, and the life experiences that these rituals recall.’ – Joey Roth

ceramicspeaker_cork_medI love the connection of the cables to the speaker via the cork plug. There’s something really organic and natural about it yet it’s a detail you typically wouldn’t expect. The contrast between the unfinished birch, the gloss of the porcelain and the texture of the cork is also great.

suurupi house extension 14

The Suurupi House Extension, located in Estonia is designed by Arhitektid Muru & Pere.

Initially designed and built in 1998/99, the one-storey house was a simple wooden ‘”matchbox” to cater for the needs of a young family with children. As the family grew and the children got older various additions were made culminating in the latest addition of a second floor in 2008/09.

‘The modest “matchbox” has been made bigger in time, the drawer was stretched out further and further until it came out of the box and could be placed, crosswise, on top as a first floor and could be covered with tangled matches.

That is how the first floor looks: a box covered with crisscrossed sticks which resembles an angular bird’s nest, a ball of hay that is pressed together, a tangle of boards, all of which glows in the dark.’ Arhitektid Muru & Pere

I personally wonder how this timber skin will age. Will it age gracefully as the timber weathers? Or will it require a lot of maintenance and need to be replaced after a number of years? Either way it looks really cool.

keith weesner - elixirKeith Weesner is an artist and hotrodder from Los Angeles, California who is best known for his paintings depicting vintage car culture and pin up illustration.

Keith studied automotive design at the Art Center in Pasadena and has worked in the animation industry creating background designs for the likes of Bruce Timm’s Batman, Superman and Justice League as well as Power Puff Girls and Gary Baseman’s Teacher’s Pet.

I really love the attention to detail and the texture that is created in his paintings from the reflections in the car bodies to the mid-century modern architecture, décor and signage.

To check out more of Keith Weesner’s work visit his website and myspace page.
